A light flashes and a box drops from the sky - 折摄
08.09.24 - 25.09.24

Supper House presents a light flashes, and a box drops from the sky, a group show featuring 8 local creatives across various fields of expertise: Alya Rahmat, Amien, Benedict Yu, Cherine Wee, Chia Ching Kai, Genevieve Leong, Owen Tee and Supassara Ho. This showcase will be the first of three popup activations happening at Ann Siang House

The show is inspired by the limitations in space that often pose a challenge for artists to create or exhibit artwork in Singapore. This relentless bugbear becomes more pronounced considering the numerous closures of independent art spaces over the recent years and the uncertain future regarding the country's important art districts.

Almost a metaphor for the smallness associated with making in this tiny island, artworks respond to the specific dimensions of 10mm x 10mm - parameters that seem restrictive
and close-ended at face value. However, the prompt does not directly refer to what these dimensions are meant to represent, intentionally playing into the elasticity of an artist's imagination. Artists in the show flex their propensity and yearning to generate new connections within, around and beyond seemingly limiting rules, in many ways mirroring the various ways they make
full use of their real life situations in the local art scene. "Bending the rules" around the premise of the show therefore gives artists the opportunity to deliver works
in innovative and head-scratching ways.

This spirit and yearning to push the boundaries is implied in the Chinese name of the show "折摄", a pun on "折射" which translates to refraction, where light is bent in a way that does not follow the norm. The character "摄" from "摄受" refers to the act of embracing, a gesture that acknowledges the struggles faced by artists of all ages in Singapore.
Ultimately, opportunities to exhibit appear like flashes of light; miracles that fall from the sky.

The first of three instalments, 28-41 Supper House is a new 3-month long co-lab concept created by Supper House, supported by 8M Asset Management. 28-41 references to the
unique location of 28 Ann Siang Hill, while unit 04-01 alludes to our venue support, 8M Real Estate. We have designed this program to focus on transient art,
taking inspiration from the evanescent nature of the space we are in.
